Reading MPI’s ‘Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries’ report (December 2021) over the weekend made for some interesting reading. Did you know that the average profit before tax for the 2021-22 season on all classes of sheep and beef farms is forecast to be $143,500 per farm (if current exchange rates hold) according to Beef + Lamb New Zealand? And this is up 9% on last year! In the scheme of things today, this does not seem like a very big wage for a 7 day-a-week job that doesn’t allow for sick days or annual leave- especially if that is split between a husband/wife team giving them $71,750 a piece (before tax) for a whole lot of work.
